Dora d'Istria, literary pseudonym of Elena Gica (1828-1888), was a writer and painter born in Bucharest. Her father, originally from the Phanariot house of the Gikas, was the minister of the interior of Wallachia and her mother was the Greek-born Romanian princess Ekaterini Foka. In 1849 she herself married the Russian prince Koltsov-Mashalsky. He had a particularly liberal spirit and developed a rich philhellenic work.
