No 259. Dimanche, 16 Septembre 1827. Syros, 6 August. Lord Cochran having under his command the frigate Hellas and three Greek brigs, has been here or in the vicinity for several days. The news we receive daily from Nafplion is not at all reassuring, several hundred people have been killed or injured in the latest disturbances happening in that place. It seems certain that Captain Grivas, Deligiannis and Zaimis, who were in the citadel of Palamidi, intended to hand over the fortress to Ibrahim Pasha. The intervention of Lord Cochrane and General Church finally led to a suspension of the surrender, and it is hoped that order will soon be restored if the Government, which during the troubles had retired to a fortified place at Burji, will consent to furnish the necessary sums to pay the wages of the troops. Many European ships were near Nafplion and tried, like the English admiral, to help the inhabitants who were forced to leave the city. Admiral Hamilton, who was near Spetses and Poros, brought the first of his islanders to Nafplion, to intervene as a mediator in so painful a struggle. An English brig from Alexandria delivered to Lord Cochrane, on behalf of the English consul and several merchant houses, letters announcing that the Egyptian fleet, with 80 vessels and 6,000 men, was departing for Methoni, whence it would probably proceed to Hydra. The news that England, France, and Russia intended to present to the Porte a note in favor of the independence of Greece, caused very great rejoicing. Great activity is noted in the European naval squadrons. The English admiral sailed for Smyrna, and to-day an English frigate and a brig, apparently bound for the same destination, dropped anchor in the harbor. Redi Pasha had a meeting in Chalkida with several Ottoman generals. Zakynthos, August 9. A rumor is circulating here that Patras and all the ports along the coastline up to Bouthrotos, opposite Corfu, are declared in a state of blockade. 2nd, p. 4. In French.
