No. 179. Jeudi, 28 Juin 1827. Trieste, 12 June. The letters from Syros, dated May 23, contain, of the capture of the monastery near Piraeus by the Greeks and the slaughter of the Turkish garrison, and of the subsequent battle against the Greeks, accounts which are exactly the same as those of Corfu, with the only difference being that the main action took place on the 6th of May and not the 4th. A Cretan who fled to Syros assures that it only took a few moments for the race to take a swift and decisive turn. Everywhere they strongly feel the loss of General Karaiskakis and his elite corps. Of the 18 Philhellenes who were in the battle, only two escaped and of the 400 men of the regular army corps only 20 escaped death. The above letters add that General Church has collected another 4,000 men near Piraeus, and that he is fortifying that position. He also sent another body of 5,000 men into the straits, to cut off the Turks' food supply from Chalkida. Lord Cochrane was at Poros ready to sail with the frigate Hellas and other ships. The Greek steamer had captured 5 Turkish ships laden with supplies and ammunition and sunk a corvette. The crew, composed of Europeans of different nations, demanded their share of the booty, based on the terms of the treaty concluded with Lord Cochrane at Marseilles. The lord refused their request, and they left the Greek service and landed in Syros. ?brahim Pasha continues his ravages along the coast of Arcadia, 8,000 people have taken refuge in the castle of Glarenza and rejected the offer made to them to surrender. They sent two representatives to Nafplio to describe their desperate situation and to ask for help. The Trieste Observer of June 14, from which this article is taken, adds: On Thursday the 10th, the Turkish fleet, consisting of twenty-eight sailing vessels, was seen passing between Cavodoro and Andros. If he had headed that day for the Athenian Gulf, he would have caused widespread disturbance, both on land and sea, and done a great deal of damage, but instead, he sailed to the east of Zea. He is said to be going to Souda, on the island of Crete. 2nd, p. 4. In French.
